WINGATE, NC (David Sherwood/Wingate University) - Wingate University vice president and director of athletics Steve Poston announced Tuesday the appointment of Ann Hancock (Wingate ’92) as head women’s basketball coach.

Hancock is the fourth coach in Wingate’s storied women’s basketball history.

Most recently, Hancock spent two seasons as an assistant women’s basketball coach at East Carolina University.

Speed, wet roads contribute to drivers death

INDIAN TRIAL, NC (WBTV) – Speeds and wet roads contributed to a car accident that took the life of the driver early Tuesday morning in Union County.

The State Highway Patrol had the grim task of shutting down Wesley Chapel-Stout Road in Indian Trail while they were investigating a tragic car accident.

Troopers said the driver of a silver sedan came over the hill around 1am at a high rate of speed, lost control, and slid sideways down the road the length of a football field.

The car hit a ditch causing it to flip several times.  The vehicle eventually ended up in some nearby woods.

Emergency crews raced to the scene, but were unable to save the driver, who was described as a younger male.

His identity is known to officials, but is not being released pending notification of the family.
