At their regularly scheduled meeting on February 12, the Indian Trail Town Council approved a new Animal Control Ordinance that will take effect April 1.

Modeled after Lake Park’s Animal Control Ordinance, the Indian Trail Animal Control Ordinance adopted by the Town Council acknowledges and confirms the authority granted to Union County under the previous adoption of the Union County Animal Control Ordinance.

The ordinance includes a new leash law requiring any dog that is off the owner’s property to be on a leash and have an identification tag. The ordinance does not contain any regulations regarding farm animals or exotic pets.

Town Council member Darlene Luther said, "This new leash law ordinance is the first step to keep residents safe from wandering animals.

In recognition of the thousands of homeless dogs and cats in Mecklenburg County, the Humane Society of Charlotte is hosting its largest annual fundraiser, the Pet Palooza dog walk, Kennelly 5K run and pet festival to support the organization’s mission.
