Commissioners select site for water tower

Commissioners select site for water tower

The Union County Board of Commissioners has selected the Morris property on Hemby Road in Weddington for the site of an elevated water tower, and directed Union County Public Works to seek zoning approval from Weddington to build the tower at the location.

On May 6, commissioners asked the Town of Weddington Council to provide feedback by May 20, on whether sites on Hemby Road and Weddington-Matthews Road were acceptable locations for a water tower. The board authorized the county to cease consideration of a site located on Highway 84.

At its May 13 meeting, the Weddington Town Council passed a resolution by a 4 to 0 vote for preliminary endorsement of the Hemby Road site.

Currently, the county has a 60-day option agreement for both the Morris property and the Weddington-Matthews Road property.

Library to rollout enhanced features for borrowing digital materials

Library to rollout enhanced features for borrowing digital materials

Union County Public Library’s platform for its e-book collection will sport a new look with enhanced features beginning April 29, when OverDrive Next Generation is launched.

With the new enhancements, patrons who borrow the library’s ever-expanding collection of fiction and nonfiction e-books will be able to download and instantly read using an Internet browser.  Borrowers will be able to save the e-book, read offline, and transfer it to other devices.  Users will find borrowing e-books easier and faster.

The homepage will have a new look as well.  Redesigned with the user in mind, patrons will find the site easier to navigate and much more inviting.  Additions such as enhanced searching capabilities, creating wish lists, and recommended titles lists will make borrowing the library’s e-books even more enjoyable.

E-book circulation has doubled this year with an average of 2,500 checkouts per month.

Ordinance limits activity on county property

Ordinance limits activity on county property

Monroe, NC – The Union County Board of Commissioners have endorsed an ordinance that would limit activities on County property.

Union County has a significant interest in protecting the health, safety and welfare of the general public and preserving public order, as well as preserving the aesthetics, cleanliness and proper sanitation of County property. Maintaining the safety of people using County property and reducing the risk of liability resulting from the use of County property is also important.

Recent activity in other cities and counties throughout the nation have resulted in public facilities and properties being taken over, not only by peaceful protest groups, but radical direct-action organizations and violent anarchist groups whose expressed objective is to disrupt the operation of or deny access to these public properties and facilities.
