Ellis named UCPS superintendent by Board of Ed

UCPS Deputy Superintendent Dr. Mary Ellis has been elected by the Union County Board of Education to take the helm of the sixth largest school system in the state of North Carolina.

"The Union County Board of Education is confident that Dr. Ellis has the experience, skills, passion, dedication and commitment to improving education for students and staff that will enable her to lead the Union County Public Schools forward to the next level," said Board of Education Chairman Dean Arp.

"Please join the Board in supporting Dr. Ellis as she moves into her new role as Superintendent of the Union County Schools."

Ellis replaces Superintendent Dr. Ed Davis who will end his exemplary 35-year career in education (seven as superintendent) with his retirement effective June 30, 2012.

Wingate introduces new women's basketball coach

WINGATE, NC (David Sherwood/Wingate University) - Wingate University vice president and director of athletics Steve Poston announced Tuesday the appointment of Ann Hancock (Wingate ’92) as head women’s basketball coach.

Hancock is the fourth coach in Wingate’s storied women’s basketball history. 

Most recently, Hancock spent two seasons as an assistant women’s basketball coach at East Carolina University.

Prior to her time in Greenville, she was the head women’s basketball coach at UNC Wilmington for 10 seasons.

Hancock was an assistant coach for seven seasons at UNC Chapel Hill, helping the Tar Heels win the 1994 NCAA Division I national championship.

As a basketball student-athlete at Wingate, Hancock was all-conference and all-district for four seasons each.

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome back Ann Hancock to Wingate University…a place where she enjoyed an outstanding academic and athletic career,” Poston says.

UCPS to hold annual Transition Fair and EC Parent Awareness Night

UNION COUNTY - The Exceptional Children’s Department of the Union County Public Schools will hold its sixth annual Transition Fair for juniors and seniors with disabilities at South Piedmont Community College from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2012.

Students will hear motivational speakers, compete in employability seminars and have access to resources and information that could help them after high school.

More than 30 community agencies will be in attendance to offer assistance and information. These include A.D.E.P.T. (Adult Developmental Education Pre-vocational Training) Programs, The Arc of Union County, the Vocational Rehabilitation Services, Beyond Academics (UNC-G), Child Care Resources, Special Needs Plan and the Exceptional Children’s Assistance Center (ECAC).

Wingate graduates its largest class

WINGATE, NC (Jeff Atkinson/Wingate University) - Wingate University graduated its largest class ever in the history of the Union county institution on Saturday, May 12. 

A total of 521 students made up the Class of 2012. 

They participated in commencement exercises in the University's Academic Quadrangle, which drew a crowd of nearly 4,500 people.

Twenty members of the Class of 1962 led this year's graduates in a procession into the Quad.  The only other time that's happened was 50 years ago when the Class of 1912 escorted the '62 graduating class.

In its 116th commencement, Wingate awarded its first class of doctorate of education.  Forty educators earned Ed.D. degrees.  They will get jobs as superintendents of schools at districts across the country.

A familiar face to WBTV viewers, former anchor Bob Inman, gave the Commencement address.

JV volunteer coach accused of sexual relationship with teen girl

UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV)- A volunteer coach for a high school basketball team has been charged after police say he developed a sexual relationship with a teenage girl.

According to investigators, 23-year-old Bart Philip Shartzer was charged on Tuesday with sex offense against a student.

WBTV has learned that Shartzer, a volunteer basketball coach for JV boys basketball team at Piedmont High School was relieved of all coaching duties on April 26th.  He had been a volunteer coach with the team for two years.

Officers say they were informed, and confirmed, that Shartzer was having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl.

Shartzer was arrested on Tuesday, posted bond and was released.

He is scheduled to appear in court on June 5 and faces five counts of felony sex offense.

When Shartzer was hired he passed all background checks, WBTV learned.

WINGATE, NC (Jeff Atkinson/Wingate University) - This month, Wingate University's television station, WUTV, and the University’s Marketing and Communications Department debuted a new TV show called "Wingate Today" on Channel 22 on Time Warner Cable in Union county.

The program features stories about people in the community doing great things in education and in life.

Some of the stories covered in the half-hour TV show's premiere:

  • Wingate University president Jerry McGee’s induction into the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame in Raleigh
  • Recent graduate who followed her passion and now teaches music at East Union Middle School
  • Alternative Spring Break – students helping in the community

"Wingate Today" airs weeknights at 9:00 pm. 

A new episode will air at the beginning of each month.

Wingate breaks ground for track facility

WINGATE, NC (WBTV) - Wingate University president Dr. Jerry McGee and vice-president and director of athletics Steve Poston joined the Bulldog family in groundbreaking ceremonies for the school’s new track and field facility on Thursday, April 26.  The event was held adjacent to the Irwin Belk Stadium and the John R. Martin Field (660 N. Main St.) on the Wingate campus.

“This track facility is a tribute to all our track & field student-athletes who have believed in our program over these first two years,” Wingate head track and field coach Joe Soehnlen says. “Without their hard work and dedication, we would not be able to be in the position we are right now…having one of the top programs in the Southeast Region.”
