WINGATE, NC (WBTV) - Wingate University president Dr. Jerry McGee and vice-president and director of athletics Steve Poston joined the Bulldog family in groundbreaking ceremonies for the school’s new track and field facility on Thursday, April 26. The event was held adjacent to the Irwin Belk Stadium and the John R. Martin Field (660 N. Main St.) on the Wingate campus.
“This track facility is a tribute to all our track & field student-athletes who have believed in our program over these first two years,” Wingate head track and field coach Joe Soehnlen says. “Without their hard work and dedication, we would not be able to be in the position we are right now…having one of the top programs in the Southeast Region.”
Soehnlen is grateful for the benefits the beautiful new facility will bring to his programs. “Having our own facility to practice on and have meets at will only help us going forward,” Soehnlen says. “It will be a pretty cool experience the first time we have a home meet and members of the campus community can watch our teams compete.”
“I know our track and field student-athletes are really looking forward to having a place they can call home,” Soehnlen says. “They are very thankful to the university for this opportunity to have a place (of their own).”
