WET’N WILD EMERALD POINTE, the Largest Water Park In The Carolinas’ celebrates the beginning of summer with a fun-filled family opening on SATURDAY, MAY 25TH at 10:00AM for the exciting 29TH SEASON!  (Opening Weekend is May 25, 26 and 27…operating hours are 10:00am-5:00pm each day.  Open daily beginning Saturday, June 8th, 2013.  Final operating day is Labor Day Monday, September 2nd, 2013)

This season, WET’N WILD EMERALD POINTE proudly announces the introduction of the all-new SOAK ZONE water spray area!  The new half-acre SOAK ZONE attraction includes a 7,000 square foot interactive water play area featuring over 35 different water elements!  SOAK ZONE is designed for exciting water spray thrills for the entire family with specialty themed seating and shaded areas, providing a waterfall of relaxation and fun for ALL ages! 

Myers Park loses 4A state golf championship in a playoff

Pinehurst, NC (WBTV)- Myers Park's quest for a 4A state golf championship came up 1 shot short as they would fall to Pinecrest in a playoff.

The 2 teams finished their 2 rounds of golf tied at 591.

On the playoff hole, Pinecrest's Zack Martin would come up with a birdie which would be the difference between the 2 teams.  Pinecrest's team would have 19 and the Mustangs had 20.

Hough would finish 3rd in the team standings and Porter Ridge would finish 10th.

On the individual side, East Chapel Hill's Ben Griffin would win the individual state championship with a 2 day today of 135.

Local golfers who finished in the top 10 include Myers Park's Phillip Oweida and Hough's Seth Gandy (tied for 4th), Myers Park's Luke Thalman (tied for 7th), and Hough's Peyton White (tied for 10th)

Forestview wins 2nd straight 3A state golf championship

Foxfire Village, NC (WBTV)- For the 2nd straight year, the Forestview Jaguars have claimed the 3A state championship in golf as they won by 22 shots over Burlington High School.

Forestview would have 3 golfers in the top 11 finishers to pace their championship run.  Will Long would win the individual state title after shooting a 6 under 66 today.  Long will play his college golf at Auburn next season.

Joining Long in the top 11 for Forestview were Will Blalock who was tied for 5th, Drew Jurs who finish in 8th, and Alex Taylor who finish tied for 11th.

Other local golfers who finished in the top 11 include South Point's Nick Stafford would finish in 2nd just one shot behind Long, South Rowan's Davis Richards would finished tied for 3rd,  Charlotte Catholic's Ethan Mead finished 9th, and Colton Naslund who finished tied for 11th.

Every year, thousands of young football fans dream of breaking the huddle with hero Steve Smith. Showmars, a proud sponsor of Steve Smith’s Football ProCamp, is making that dream a reality for four Charlotte-area children this summer.

Showmars is giving away four spots to the 2013 Steve Smith Football ProCamp. Football fans can sign up by filling out an entry form at any of Showmars 28 Charlotte-Metro locations.

ProCamp is a youth athletic camp for children in grades 1- 8. Established in 1998, the camp provides thousands of youth the opportunity to attend camp with their sporting heroes. At the camp, attendees learn football fundamentals and meet children their own age with like interests.

This year’s ProCamp event will be held at Ardrey Kell High School on Monday, June 10, and Tuesday, June 11.

The Union County Public Library is presenting "Day Trip Vacations," in the Griffin Room of the Monroe Library at 6:30 p.m., on Tuesday, May 7.

There are hundreds of interesting, intriguing, and little known places to visit within easy driving distance of Monroe and Union County. Did you know that a world renowned topiary garden, full of fantastic living sculptures, is less than an hour’s drive from Monroe? The South Carolina Cotton Museum, with “the world’s largest Boll Weevil” (don’t worry, it’s a replica) is equally close.

Cane Creek Park hosted its 3rd Annual Take a Kid Fishing Day on April 20.

Approximately 75 kids and their families attended the event, which included giveaways and contests.

The winner of the “Big Fish” contest was Mickela Keyea, who caught a 2.34 lb. bass. Nathan McDowell won the prize for catching the most fish, bringing in 20.

Scholastic Anglers, Walmart, Bass Pro Shops and Dick’s Sporting Goods sponsored the event.

Gander Mountain Firearms opens in Monroe, brings nearly 100 jobs

MONROE, NC - A national sporting goods store opened in Monroe Tuesday morning, bringing nearly 100 jobs with it.

The Gander Mountain Firearms Super Center is in the Poplin Place Shopping Center, located at 2901 W. Roosevelt Boulevard.

The store replaces a Best Buy store, which closed last year.

The store has sporting goods, but specializes in firearms, making it one of the largest dealers of new and used firearms in the area.
